Hi guys, since i had my first chromebox its been like 2 or 3 months... I sold it to try out the nvidia shield TV Anfroid Box.
Now after nothing but bothering myself with different Android Boxes im definatly going back to a Asus Chromebox. Should be here tommorow and i hope the install runs niceley...

So i got my chromebox today and withing a half an hour i was done and openelec was running :-D
- Now im playing some files over my gigabit lan from my nas and am noticing that i am getting skipped frames with some Files.
Are there any specifics to with things to check in the Hardware Acceleration Settings? Or anything else which needs to be done?
I am playing those Extreme Bitrate Jellyfish files just for testing around and it just stutters and then the box gets stuck allthough cpu load doesnt go over 10%
- Is there anything to optimize it even further or are theese just normal hickups where the performance of the chromebox just isnt enough anymore?

the OpenELEC 6.x betas do not require any settings adjustment OOTB to run properly. I've yet to find any properly encoded h.264 file that the ChromeBox can't handle (excluding Hi10P nonsense), but without knowing the specifics of the file you tested it's hard to say. Obviously the best thing to do is put the file(s) in question on a USB stick and try playback from there, just to rule out network issues (it's possible you're only operating in 100Mbit mode?). If you're still having issues, post a link to the file and/or video encoding info (codec, profile, bitrate, resolution, framerate, etc)

im having problems with the 100mbit and 120mbit ones... but ill give usb a try. Maybe you could also test these over network. These files are common Testfiles for Kodi to see how much power and throughput can be achieved.
On youtube you can find videos of people playing the files if you search jellyfish and kodi...

there's absolutely no reason to care about the playback of those files, as they aren't indicative of real-world encodes, so I'm not going to waste my time testing them. 60Mbps is the max for 3D bluray, anything more than that isn't conforming to any spec or norm.

You are unlikely to find any 1080/24p, 1080/50i or 60i or 720/50p or 60p content encoded at much over 50Mbs in the real world unless you encode yourself, for no real reason. 2D Blu-ray maxes out below 50Mbs. Even broadcast uplinks of major events (F1, Olympics etc.) don't get above 50Mbs (60Mbs MPEG2 is the highest I've seen) and they are 4:2:2.
Sure you can master them yourself - but why?
Unless you are using a codec like AVC Intra, Pro Res, DNXHD or JPEG2000 (none of which are likely to be hardware accelerated) you won't find higher bitrates on conventional content, even in the broadcast domain.

Seems strange....i remember to had tested 100 and 120 via gigabit lan without problem

thats what im saying, there supposed to run fine.... im clearly having an issue here but i will test with usb because its probably my network again...

it's almost definitely your network, the 120Mbps version plays without any drops or skips here over my gigE lan (curiosity got the best of me)
Yeah, funny thing is i just ran it off the usb and it ran fine to... then i ran it off the network a couple of times and now it ran flawlessly.
So its something wierd with my nas. Maybe my mycloud was busy working or something... had strange network things happen in the last time. Could also be my router.
But im happy to have a clue where to look if any more problems occur. So its always nice when people help out.
Hello forum-- ... wondering about a setup using my current AVR (not 4k/UHD capable) and the ability to utilize full 4096x2160 on my 55' UHD display. OG 1080p is just fine but this ChromeBox is an awesome piece of kit and I want to test all features. Currently I'm using a DP2DVI adapter connected to a DVI2HDMI cable to my display but the adapter max resolution is 1080p. The HDMI port from CB is ported to my AVR for HD bitstreaming.
I'm thinking of going
THIS route to achieve both goals of 4k + HD bitstreaming w/o having to upgrade my AVR, but want to see if anyone else is using a setup similar to this currently. The adapter is what I'm most unsure about although it boast's full 4K (3840x2160) support, my UHD display signal from ChromeBox on my current setup is showing 4096x2160 if I use HDMI directly.
Questions:
A.) What is your display resolution showing using a 4k DP2HMDI adapter from the CB to your UHD display and which adapter are you using?
B.) 4096x2160 vs. 3840x2160 (UHD/4k) on CB?
Please advise on either if possible!
Currently running OE 5.0.8 with Kodi 14.2 on my Chromebox. (These are the versions installed by default when I used Matt's awesome scripts setting up my Chromebox many moons ago.) When OE 6 final is released, will my Chromebox automatically update to it (and Isengard)? Matt, are you waiting on a final version of OE 6 before putting Isengard in there? Since Isengard final has been out for a little while and I'm still on 14.2, is that the hold up?

the max resolution using a DP->HDMI adapter is 4096x2160p at 24Hz (or 3840x2160p at 30Hz), since such adapters put the DP port into HDMI signaling mode, so it outputs a HDMI (1.4b) signal, the max possible by a Haswell mobile GPU.

I'm not sure if the OE team has decided to make 6.0 an automatic update from 5.0; if not, then you'd just do a manual install (which is dead simple) as linked on the ChromeBox wiki. The script currently gives the user the option to install either 5.0.8 stable or 5.95.3 beta, but doesn't handle updates since that's handled by the OS (and there's no need for the script to do so given how easy a manual update is).
Also note that there are
test builds for Isengard using the new Intel VAAPI renderer, which is much improved over the current one both in performance and quality. It's what I'm running myself, and once released, the script will likely offer the option for either the standard OE 6.0 or 6.0-VAAPI test build, the latter probably being the default.

I have a feeling that DP->HDMI converters are labelled as 1080p max because at the time most of them were produced that was the max HDMI standard available. As the adaptor pushes the DP chipset into "HDMI mode" (it doesn't convert DP video to HDMI, it tells the GPU to output in "HDMI over DP" rather than "Native DP" mode) I think they support whatever can be supported over HDMI 1.4a and the Chipset.
Technically 3840x2160 isn't in the HDMI 1.4a standard (that didn't include the CEA modes to describe those resolutions) it appears to work fine.
I'm running my Chromebox over HDMI (not DP - didn't see the point of using an adaptor) to a Sony UHD set and have the following modes supported in OpenElec :
3840x2160 @ 23.976/24.000/25/29.97/30.00Hz
4096x2160 @ 23.976/24.000Hz
Full VAAPI H264 acceleration is available for these resolutions and frame rates.
I believe the DP->HDMI output would offer the same.

Tested last night... Up to 100Mbps test clips (don't have a 120Mbps) play fine via wired SMB for me.
