Code:
systemctl restart kodi
is the way to restart kodi, link that to a button press
Not sure if this is possible or even the correct place to ask but anyway

Can you run another instance of Openelec from USB using the standalone version,

I used Win32diskmanager to write to usb, then on the chromebox i installed it to a another usb but when i boot from the new usb i get an error

Something about don't change boot if you don't know what you are doing, can get the exact message if needed.

Just trying to test different versions without wiping the internal drive.

thanks

But the problem is sometimes OpenElec freezes, so I want to reboot the Chromebox everytime I start the activity on my Logitech Harmony. Is there a way to issue an IR command to restart OpenElec?

Thanks!

I'd think your efforts would be better spent troubleshooting the freezes - there's no reason for it to be doing so. I can't say I've experienced a lockup or freeze in close to a year (from a non-testing version anyway).

there's no reason that running it from USB shouldn't work, in the fact the EZ Setup script explicitly supports that option. But impossible to know what the issue is since you've given us no information. A good start would be what version of OE you installed to USB and the error message when attempting to boot the USB.
Yes you can do that. Or just test the new version using the install usb 'live'.

Thanks Matt and sorry for the lack of info

I was trying to install the 6.94.2 from the wiki page to usb but this is the error i get

NEVER Touch boot= in extlinux.com
if you don't know what you are doing

your install is now broken

normal boot in 60s...

I have really no clue what i am doing Smile

Thanks and it seems available on older versions of openelec but not on the newer ones i was trying

I'll test here shortly to see if I can reproduce. The install media for OE versions > 5.0.8 requires you to type 'live' at the boot: prompt to boot in live mode, it's not a menu option anymore

edit: I just installed 6.94.2 to USB and booted right up, no issues at all. I can only guess that you had a bad install to USB and would recommend trying again
I’m trying to update my Kodi Chromebox to the new OpenELEC 7.0 / Kodi 16.0 (unofficial beta: 6.94.2). My problem is when I reboot and hit ESC it still just boots up like normal and I don’t get to point to the USB drive to get the update. What is the trick there or am I doing this the wrong way? I’ve been running this as a standalone OpenELEC Chromebox since last summer. I’ve been getting update errors so I wanted to do it manually and get the latest version of KODI too.

the update errors are likely due to your system partition being too small (OE now requires a larger one), so a clean install is the easiest way to resolve that.

As for booting the USB, are you getting the 'Press ESC for boot menu' text? If not, then your USB isn't being recognized and you need to use a different one.
It is far easier to just transfer the tar file to the .update directory and reboot.

sounds like that update is failing due to the system partition size check on versions 6.0.1+
I'm fine with doing a clean install. I'm just wondering how I'm going to do that without just resetting to factory. One of the big problems I had the first time is I setup this box is my TV. The screen sets to larger than the viewing area automatically. Is there a way to get the viewing area smaller in the Openelec boot? Sorry it took so long to get back I got little kids.

Ok thanks

the live boot helps a ton
OK I put the OpenELEC-Generic.x86_64-6.94.2.img in the USB and tried the reboot. I still don’t get the ability to point to the USB. After Kodi comes up it says “Mounted removable Hard Drive USB_DISK” in the lower right hand corner. Then it gives an “auto installation failed”.

How are you putting the image onto the USB drive? Win32DiskImager as per the wiki? Have you tried another USB stick?
Yes, might need to move partitions first.
