As per the wiki, if you're getting the boot menu prompt but not able to bring up the menu, it's a keyboard issue; if the menu isn't showing, it's your USB stick.
Also, you need to boot a Linux live USB to run the firmware utility script and restore the stock firmware *before* using the ChromeOS recovery media (since it won't do squat without the stock firmware loaded)

SSL23_GET_SERVER_HELLOslv3 alert handshake failure.
Matt, any ideas on this? I'm stuck and can't setup my sparkling new box...
If I can't get passed this, is there a way to download and run the script manually?

wonder if it's due to the time/date not being synchronized on a new box - can you log in as a guest and check the ChromeOS version for me? Then after the time/date sync, log out and try again.

I read that on the previous page and checked the date / time using the command "date"...the date was correct and it showed 2 hours off (PT)...I'm in texas, so I was CT...
So the date / time looked correct...
I can still do what you ask and I can report back tonight...

How exactly do I do this?

Settings / About ChromeOS, IIRC

I assume this is in the ChromeOS GUI then right?

right, just log in ChromeOS as a guest and then go to Settings/About (exact wording / location varies based on ChromeOS version)

I synced the time and it worked. So that was the issue.
Ok I have a new problem (well new to me).
Because of the overscan on my tv I couldn't see which numbers were what on the script. And I ended up picking the wrong one.
Now I would like to start over but I need to put the firmware back to stock first.
The problem is I can't get anything to boot from USB. All I get is the same "booting from hard disk" message.
I have made 2 different live Linux USB sticks and still it won't recognize it.
Ideas please?
Made them how? What distro/iso?
ubuntu-16.04-desktop-amd64 + Win32DiskImager
Nothing is working - really strange...
I also tried Ubuntu 14.04.2 but still I get nothing when booting except the "booting from hard disk" message.
You're inserting the USB then powering on, correct? Try one of the rear ports if using the front ones
