and still my 5.1 sound doesn't work in movies, only in games!?!?
1) enable digital sound in system -> audio hw. also choose which codecs to pass through (i.e. what does your receiver support)

2) play the video.

that will give you 5.1 for 5.1 sources.

if you want 5.1 for stereo sources, mind the 'output to all speakers' setting in the osd (osd - on screen display - the menu you get when u hit start in fullscreen). if you want that to be the default behaviour; use 'set as default for all movies'.

for music, this is avail as a general setting (that is, output to all speakers).

hope this helps.
i've done all this and still when the movie plays 5.1 i don't hear a sound....and in the games it works...
funny, when i uncheck the digital option in system-a/v option it works?!? should it be this way?
yeah, games/the xbox output on both analog and digital sound if you run analog sound.

i think your problem is hw lacking support for ac3 passthrough (i..e only pcm support).
now i have to use the dsp mode on the receiver to get sound from the surround speakers...hmm
i can't understand why it works so briliant in games...now i tried colin mcrae and the surround is perfect!!!
try this; enable digital in xbmc but disable the passthrough settings. do you get audio then?
which are the passthrough settings?

by the way, really appreciate your help
now i have disabled pass through. and it works!

but now my receiver doesn't show that the sound is ac3 but it works...

thanks for your help spiff!
