So, finaly got an acitvation email, but I had to switch to my gmail address to receive it. I requested the activation to be sent to an @gmx.net email address and the process did not alert me of any issues, but just did not send an email. When I changed my address to @gmail.com I got the email immediately.

Maybe you would like to reconsider other mail providers?

It is probably in your spam. We specifically tell people to add the address to their whitelist on the sign up page.
