After some random period of time (1 hr - 200 hrs) my wireless keyboard and remote (that behaves like a wireless keyboard) cease working with XBMC (they still work fine in other applications).
I found some other threads:

They suggest the solution is upgrading to Helix (XBMC 14) due to incompatibilities with Linux SDL. But Helix is in Alpha (and the wiki says alphas will not work reliably).
Is there any solution? A (1) non-functional Helix alpha version or a (2) non-functioning Gotham release (no remote) isn't much of a choice.
This is my 'main' XBMC used by friends and family, so no remote is a problem. Regressing to Frodo will cause database problems, correct? SDL is a library right, so there is no way to restart it (e.g. like a failed service)?
