VP9 720p videos play just fine in CM11's built in player, which AFAIK also relies on FFmpeg software decoders. The CPU usage of mediaserver meanwhile is mostly ranging from 100/400 to 200/400 in my Tegra3-based tablet.
On the other hand, Kodi is not handling those files well. A/V desync is noticed from the start with a lot of frames dropped. Kodi's CPU usage is steadily >260% [The decoder's multi-threading might not be optimal].
I'm assuming the decoder is the only culprit here. Kodi could be spending a percentage of cycles on something else. I don't know.
Can anyone confirm this performance issue?
