Sorry in advance for the newbe questions...

I installed Crystalbuntu (thumb drive). Works great except I can't access my external HD. With my "old" XBMC I could map my HD using SMB. Now I can't.

Is there a step-by-step procedure out there?

If I install the BCM970015, will I loose WiFi capability?

My ATV1 is in a different room while my HD connected to my Airport Extreme is in another. Set up works great with older version of XBMC.

You lose internal wifi with the Broadcom module, yes. You can add USB wifi, though. Accessing the SMB HDD should be the same as with previous versions, so I'm not sure why that wouldn't work anymore. Maybe try adding the SMB share using an IP address instead of the SAMBA browser in XBMC/Kodi.
