Just switched over from Apple TV to Fire TV and using Kodi airplay for the first time.
I use airfoil to stream spotify. Is there a way I can get it to show the album artwork in Kodi?

Enable debug logging and airtunes component logging in settings->system - then post a
debug log (wiki) while streaming.
The artwork is shown as soon as the client sends it. The fact that you don't see any is most likely because the used client (airfoil?) doesn't send any artwork to Kodi (it might have sent it to Apple TV - we are not able to control if it sends it or not - it depends on what the client app detects as "official" or "worth to send artwork to").
