I reckon that many new users looking for support, if the go to
http://kodi.tv and see the word 'wiki' their eyes will glaze over and so they hit a word that they know - 'forum' - they then ask questions that the wiki would have answered.
I wonder if it might be a bit more user friendly if it said 'Manual' - and maybe even more heavy suggestions that first time users should hit the link.
In fact we could have two links, one to Manual for the wiki front page and One 'Getting Started' to point to
First_time_user (wiki)

That sounds pretty insightful, is there per chance a way of having a pop up/notification page when a member first registers on the forum with links to what "nickr" suggested in OP. Would be beneficial to persons interested in KODI and help resolve some of the easier questions within the FAQ's that have already been documented. I can't say how many times I've linked replies to First time user/wiki area.

Just tried it. Unfortunately, it totally screws up the page formatting. May have to alter other thinks to make it work.

Hw'bout a PM notification/pop-up plugin, synchronous with the alert bar.
On register, new user gets a PM with link to.... , pop-up notifies of PM
maybe have phrases like
"Start Here"
"welcome guide"
"kodi welcome guide"
"learn the basics of kodi"
"bug Ned and nickr until you force them to provide wiki link guide"

I think it's a good idea, certainly can be worked into the new design.

+1 for this suggestion to change the text/link from "Wiki" to a more generically describing "
Guide" or "
Manual" on the main
http://kodi.tv index menu bar as well as in the forum top menu.
Perhaps better yet maybe change it to "Guide (Wiki)" / "Manual (Wiki)" or to "Wiki Guide" / "Wiki Manual" to make it more clear the wiki is a guide/manual and the guide manual is a wiki.
Also suggest to add subdomain alias/redirects for
http://guide.kodi.tv as .guide is the generic top-level domain for help sites like manuals and wikis.
As such I also recommend that the Kodi team register the domain name
