I am having a very narrow problem using a PS3 Dualshock controller under kodibunti (trusty-14.04)

If I start the machine directly to a kodi session, when I start emulationstation from within the programs menu, the PS3 Dualshock is non-functional.
If I start the machine to a LX Desktop and then start kodi from a desktop icon, the controller works perfectly in emulationstation.
In both cases, the PS3 controller works in kodi to start emulationstation.

What what is different about the 2 sessions?

In case anyone else is trying to get this to work, this is how I got around the problem:

I set up the Lubuntu session to autostart kodi. and the controller now works when leaving kodi for emulationstation..

I think its a permission problem. When starting kodi from insuide the Lubuntu session, the owner of the task may be different.
