Full Version: Resolution Switching (1080p, 720p, 480p)

I have Kodi installed on Fedora 21: kodi-14.2-1.fc21.x86_64
I am really enjoying it a lot!

The one thing I am doing on a frequent basis is manually changing resolution which is not an easy process. The key changes I make are switching between 1080p, 720p, and 480p. I currently do this via xrandr. I am very familiar with how to change the resolution via the GUI settings interface and xrandr.

I need these resolutions specifically to allow my scaler to work. I don't want scaling to be performed on my computer when I have a dedicated scaler the clearly provides better results.

Can the resolution be automatically changed based upon the content I am playing (which is typically 1080p, 720p, 480p)?

If not automatically then is there an easy to change resolution? Can I change resolution with the remote (via my Android phone)? Can I set-up a hot-key? What are my options?

I searched the forums on this and only found one similar request (http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=...p+and+480p) with no response.
Kodi does not change resolution automatically, only refresh rate. You can either map a button on your remote to run a (shell/python) script that calls xrandr or write a kodi plugin that does it automatically whenever a video starts playing. But I'm not 100% sure if the python API allows access to the video dimensions.
People felt need for this feature since 2009. I wonder when it will be implemented. Today's TVs have much more advanced upscalers etc. it would be nice to have it as a feature. See:

Kodi can do Lanczos scaling. You seriously wanna tell us your TVs and dedicated scalers have something better than Lanczos?

So, what super-duper scaling method are your TVs and dedicated scalers using? Please name them including their advantages.
