I have a NAS as part of my home network containing amongst other things videos and music. I can connect fine using ES File Explorer however when I try to import my music library into Kodi from my NAS I can only see the External Storage and Root Filesystem - my NAS is nowhere to be found??

Thanks for your help!
which kind of protocol are you using? NFS or SMB? I think ES file explorer uses SMB shares. Do you use the same for your Kodi installation?
How do I find this out - I think my NAS is NTFS but my Android Box??
Your HDDs might be formatted as NTFS, but what I'm talking about is a network protocoll which is in no way related to the format of the HDD.

Read this SMB (wiki) and this NFS (wiki) to get more informations.

For the most common way you have to add a source under the home menu "video"->"files"->"add videos" and then chose the used way to your NAS which might be either SMB or NFS (there will be options for that). I think it's SMB, as this is a common protocol. But it might be NFS, too. So you have to check which kind of shares you have done on your NAS (maybe via webinterface of your NAS...depends on which kind of NAS you are using) or play with the options in Kodi GUI and see, which one will "see" your NAS shares.

The screenshots still mentions XBMC, but it's the same way for Kodi.
When I go the way you describe to add, in my case music, I go....Music - Add Music... - Browse - Windows network (SMB) - Workgroup then my NAS is listed there and I can go on to add a shortcut to it in the Music menu though I do need to do a small search for it by going back and forth.
My NAS is also listed in UPNP devices but when I click on it, it buffers and does nothing! Also listed under Zeroconf Browser as (*FTP) and (*Samba) but again when clicked on, nothing!
I can add it by Network Location by telling it my IP address and this works fine and to a certain extent I am happy with this! With all this set up however when I go Settings - Audio - Library - Import Music Library, my NAS is still not listed...as I said I am not to concerned just curious what is not set up correctly as I am keen to get my set up right from the start so I understand what is going on - I will be however be very happy when I have worked out when I hover over Music in the main menu, arrow down and a direct link to the music on my NAS appears there as opposed to how it is now (I have to click on Music in the main menu - .. to take me back - then access my NAS there, as I cannot workout how to get in in the lower submenus (I have asked for help with this on another thread http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=226634) I could live with it this way but the other half and even the kids would get frustrated!!

Thanks so much for your reply!!

Big Grin

Of course not, because you don't want to "import" the library, you want to create it Wink. That's a difference. Libraries can only be imported if you exported them first. For exporting a library you have to create it first...you see? Wink So, if you never created a library you can't either export or import it. There are some exceptions, but we won't go too far at this point Wink

Read here for how to add music to your library: http://kodi.wiki/view/Adding_music_to_the_library

And here for the import/export thing, which is not related to adding sources: http://kodi.wiki/view/Import-export_library

Tbh, you really should read more in the wiki...mostly everything is well explained there. Wink
Cheers David - that actually makes sense...will give it a go and let you know!
