So.... my question is..... should I put my new solid state hard disk in my KODI machine, or my NPVR back end machine? Which would have the most impact? Both machines are identical in terms of hardware.

It depends on how you are planning to save your recordings/time shifting. I would put add the ssd to the NPVR machine and use if for just live TV and time shifting, and continue to save recording the way you are now.

I noticed a difference in Kodi (well, it was still XBMC when I did this) when I changed out the system HD for a SSD. I'd put the SSD in the machine you use on a day to day basis for your front end. I'm assuming that's the Kodi machine, so that'd be my recommendation.
