I want the smallest file size that will allow me to not be able to tell that I'm watching a rip. I'm guessing 8mbps should suffice, but I'm willing to go to 15mbps if needed. The majority of my collection is action/adventure so there's a lot of motion. I haven't decided on a program either, but I'm open to try whatever you guys are using.
Eeps.. in a lot of cases you would be breaking DRM/copywrite and most people in this forum are very sensitive to messages that council this activity (in some jurisdictions even talk about cracking DRM is a crime) so I'll proceed under the assumption that you have non DRM disks. Google is your friend and I found dozens of examples, including Youtubes, but these are some of the best

Ah. I'm sorry. I wasn't thinking about the DRM thing. It's sad that studios don't even want us to make a copy of something we've bought. I understand them not wanting it to be shared, but if it's strictly for personal use, there shouldn't be a problem in my eyes. Thank you for the links and not banning me, although I seemed to have broke a rule. I won't ask about it again.
Looking back into the forums you will find messages that talk about various sizes file would be best at without too much degradation. Your assumption is about right, for the most part you can strip the audio that you don't use and extras and save half the disk which in some cases is 12-15 gigs, at that point even a moderate compression will take you down to 8 gigs, and that's without dropping the res to 720p which surely will drop that figure down to manageable size. Check the handbrake forums for optimum settings, I've always used the defaults, but my peepers don't seem to mind.

Thank you, PatK. I'll look around those forums for sure.

MakeMKV and Handbrake would make this process as easy as possible. Handbrake might be able to handle both tasks.
Thank you both for the tips.
Handbrake is terrible, if you must use a GUI then go with Staxrip or Hybrid. Both offer far more options.
I'm comfortable with a command line interface. What program would you suggest, Piers?
On Windows I like VidCoder as a GUI front end for the Handbrake library.
