I forgot to say, sometimes I will boot this machine without the TV / monitor turned on, so will have no display on bootup.

1) See HOW-TO:Autostart_Kodi_for_Linux (wiki) the upstart version on top works.
2) You can load the edid for the devices you connect permanently that way makes the machine think the devices are turned on and available even if they are not. See Creating_and_using_edid.bin_via_xorg.conf (wiki)
