Hello!
I have installed miniDLNA 1.0.24 as a DLNA server on my Raspberry Pi 2 with Raspbian Wheezy, and Kodi 15.1 as a DLNA client on my MacBook with Mac OS X Yosemite.
Kodi is able to play any kind of video with integrated subtitles, but it fail to show external subtitles.
Of course video and subtitles share the same name, but differ on the extensions.
What can I do?
I am not sure DLNA even supports the use of external subtitles. You should be able to play the movie with subs if you use SMB or NFS to access the movies.
The UPnP and DLNA protocols can support this, but it requires support from the server software. I would just skip the DLNA server and just use NFS, SMB, or something like that.
