New to Kodi and it is driving me insane!!!!
Source after source I am trying to add and most of the time I get the message "couldn't retrieve directory information. This could be due to the network not being connected"
I know my network is fine so can anybody help me out please?

I remember struggling at first but got it to work eventually

If you're trying to add network sources i understand your pain. The gui for it is a bit like banging your head against a wall.
It's easier just to write into sources.xml
Read the links posted, you'll get it.
