it seems like it is not that popular?

Nexus Player is still an excellent box. I picked up two of them that were on sale, and they will likely be replacing more expensive units.

The Nexus Player is just a basic entry-level "Android TV" system (not to be confused with android-based TV boxes). The official Android TV platform will be supported for many years.
