Hi everybody!

I want to make a little and cheap home server (no raid and stuff) to use primarly for kodi, but also to download file within and with the possibility to make his own wifi hotspot.

There must be some prerequisite:

-It must run linux, this way i can set autorun programs, a web torrent control panel, vnc, ssh access and more.
-USB and Ethernet must NOT be on the same bus (so, no raspberry pi, sadly) otherwise it would not have enough bandwith to both read from USB and send data trough ethernet, also a wifi port on a separate bus, while not essential, is highly appreciated

I found this: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/pin...per-comput

Have linux support, i asked them and they said it use a separate bus for ethernet and usb, but is a kickstarter, i would love something i can buy right now, even if for a bit more :/

Any suggestion?
Sadly the Pine64 is based on an Allwinner SoC - so a non-starter for Kodi : http://www.cnx-software.com/2015/12/05/1...wdfunding/

(Search the forum for the many discussions about Allwinner video acceleration...)

Have a look at the Odroid C1+ and see if that meets your requirements.

Yeah, i know about the allwinner problems, but looks like that they use the same chip of the remix mini, and they managed to get kodi working nice on it.

I contacted them about it, i'll wait for an answer.

I'll also look at the odroid, thanks!

The OP is building a server, not a kodi box.

I read
Quote:I want to make a little and cheap home server (no raid and stuff) to use primarly for kodi
as he wanted to run Kodi on the server, but you could read it to mean he wanted the server to 'feed' Kodi. Could be either as it's ambiguous.

There have been versions of Kodi that run on Allwinner devices for a while. They all had major issues. It's seriously not recommended as a Kodi platform until they release driver support that actually works.
Odroid C1+ has exactly what i need!

Linux and 3 buses (one for ethernet and 2 for usb, this way i can feed an usb disk on a bus AND a wifi antenna on the other!
As a user and developer of OpenELEC distros for this platform, be a bit careful about the usb dongles you connect to the C1+ due to the older version of the Linux Kernel used (v3.10.80+). If do a minor bit of research you will be fine.

There are now some nice Linux flavored Distros available for this wee little beastie. Smile
I think you will pleasantly surprised.

The cheap HardKernel usb dongles are ones guaranteed to work well as they are supported by the Kernel, such as this Dual Band WiFi:

There are a bunch of people using these C1+'s as cheap servers due to the GigaE Ethernet that does not have to share a bus like the RPi2 does. The Linux fellas over on the HardKernel forum will help you out as well. They're a friendly knowledgable bunch Smile

Thanks a lot!

Do you know what kind of software do they use for the server?
I would start in this other OS sub forum:

http://forum.odroid.com/viewforum.php?f=...2c608c0d23

And have a look at the well supported Odrobian Jessie thread.
Just join the forum and fire away with questions, the Linux guys over there are knowledgable and helpful.

I'll take a closer look!
interesting, if we leave kodi aside, can i throw bunch of hdd's (no RAID needed) on it and run full ubuntu server? with mysqld and vdr? it can nicely replace my old pc without consuming a lot of power and generate noise.

Made me speechless: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topics...e_UhiO00t8 - they got 1 million euros and did not even know what they will ship ... that's too funny.
@Jhyrachy

I'm looking for such solution myself. As it seems, it's a challenge to find anything that can match Allwinner A20 SoC solution in price per performance ratio. The way to go for you would be either Banana Pi PRO or Banana Pi R1. I will go for Banana Pi as I don't need WiFi.
if your gonna use a allwinner soc the best solution is to use this distro

http://www.armbian.com/download/

that community really tries to make an effort into making the allwinner soc work as good as possible brought my old Cubieboard2 back from the dead.
