The one with the astronaut, wanted to make it something different maybe just a pattern.

System>Appearance>Skin>Settings. The background customizer will let you set custom images for each of the main menu items.

I still don't seem the option to change it, I don't want to play with backrounds for menu items, just the wallpaper thats behind everything. By default its an astronaut...

Yes, the default background for each home menu item is an astronaut (Gravity). All the home menu items have the same background set by default. If you want to change them you can by going to each one and setting a new background. Up to you if you want to do this or not.
