Now we have Kodi 17 with videoplayer I was thinking if anyone could tell me if the PQ difference is small or large between Kodi v17 and MADVR + LAVfilters?

Can anyone who has used both tell me what PQ is better as of Aug 2016?

Thanks
kodi 17 gives you exactly the same pq as kodi 16 or older. as far as i know there were no changes to videoplayer that influence the pq.
What will be new in Kodi 17 is 3dLUT support for color calibration, so you can use 3D LUT ICC profiles from madVR, see: http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=202691

This was mentioned in a blog post

https://kodi.tv/kodi-v17-krypton-alpha-3/
Quote:Developer laurimyllari added a ColorManager class that supports loading madVR 3DLUT files, and loading ICC display profiles, creating source profiles and linking them. Users can use this to correct their display response with a 3DLUT file, or emulate other displays (with whitepoint, primaries and gamma selectable at runtime) with an ICC profile of their own display. The ICC profile linking is still work in progress, but is functional and shows what can be done with it.

And in a another blog post it was mentioned that OpenGL apperently got a few other new features too(?)

https://kodi.tv/kodi-v17-krypton-alpha-2/
Quote:• Rework of videorendering, including many fixes and minor improvements for all platforms. OpenGL got new features like dithering (reduces banding when transforming from limited to full range colour space) and first round of 3dlut (look up tables stored in OpenGL units for fast access used for colour profile calibration) which has been added for next months.
• Almost complete rewrite of audio/video syncing and make it more robust and accurate
• VideoPlayer can switch resolution without any noticeable effect. (provided decoder support it)
