I had a question before I download the ISO for Ubuntu.
It gives you 2 choices, Desktop, or Server.
Is there much of a difference? Which is recommended for XBMC?
Thanks!

Well, either could work (once you add the right packages), but do the Desktop. It'll setup the graphical environment for you, which XBMC needs.
I installed Ubuntu 7.10 Server, then installed Xubuntu desktop (apt-get xubuntu-desktop).
This gave me a fairly lightweight install, and XBMC had everything it needed.

that would be apt-get install xubuntu-desktop I believe, the result of which is "package not found". Any chance you could be more exacting for those of us who aren't Linux pros?
Gah, got it - the package name IS correct but install as a command switch is a must. Will report backhow this works since I want a slim install for testing too.
Thanks for the tip about xubuntu. I'm currently attempting to run XBMC on a p4 2.5 with 512mb ram. I need all the resources I can get.
