Hey all,

As I love Kodi's Video and Music streaming ability's, I've learned to hate the picture section.
When I try to open a folder with 1000+ images in it, Kodi gives a dialog 'reading image information' (something like that, translated) . This dialog remains for ages finally resulting in a freeze or sudden reboot.
Same thing happens when I try to start a 'slideshow with folders'.
Only with low number of images in a folder this will work.
To my surprise, this is also the case when trying to start a slideshow from Upnp source; it just takes ages to load. Compared this with my Samsung tv connecting to upnp source just starts displaying images immediately.
Is Kodi trying to load all image information in memory before it starts displayingHuh?
Not very efficient if that's the case.
For me the Kodi Picture section is unusable like this.

I'm currently using Kodi 18.0 Alpha on RaspberryPi2 running Libreelec.
I am using Milhouse's Libreelec testbuilds [url=http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=298461[/url]

Problems occur with or without picture database addon, and seem not Kodi Build related, I have this problem since Kodi 16 official. It has just never worked.

Any help or suggestion much appreciated

Greetings

(sorry for my english)
Bumping an old thread because I'm having the same issue and I'm surprised  (unless I'm blind) it hasn't been mentioned numerous times.

I just bought a KDLinks A400 running Jarvis 16.1. On the video side, Kodi works flawlessly so far. But for LARGE photos files, it fails miserably. Takes forever to scan and then it just crashes to the home screen every time. Folders with about 200 photos aren't a problem.

So far, the only decent program I found was a 3rd party app I found at the Play Store, but unfortunately it's not ad free. Not sure if it's OK to mention it here since it works separate from Kodi. It loads large photo files very quickly on my Android box.

This is all new to me and I've been unable to find any Photo Viewer add on for Kodi that works.
Hello @steady teddy

If you disable "Automatically generate thumbnails", does it still crash?

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I just tried that with the "Automatically generate thumbnails" setting turned off but it's still crashing. Since this was the same folder I tried to scan before, the scan progress bar goes immediately to complete and then crashes.
Ok.

You will need to provide a debug log. The instructions are in my signature. Use the Basic method. Once you have enabled debugging in Settings>System Settings>Logging, restart Kodi then replicate the problem. In your case, capture the crash caused by whatever you do in the Pictures section. Once done upload to pastebin and link back here. Note: Full logs only. No partial or redacted logs
Make sure the "Show EXIF picture information" setting is off.

It is of no influence.  See this thread:

It's the same discussion, when using the 'slideshow with folders' option Kodi alway want to load all image details into memory.
Large folders will crash Kodi as a result of draining all available memory of the system.
