What would be a good reason to use MrMC on the Shield instead of Kodi?

You know your environment and needs better than anyone. If Shield is your only device then consider the approach Kodi takes to their product vs. MrMC. For example, I don't use MrMC, because at this time I need to provide a consistent look, feel, and function across different hardware platforms. I've been able to accomplish this with Kodi before Shield or support for the android platform even existed.
Pass through audio is not working with DTS HD tracks. I've got an MKV file that was ripped from a Blu-ray disk and when playing the DTS D track with Kodi set to pass through all i hear is very faint audio with a crackling sound. Track plays fine if i turn off pass through setting. I can confirm that this same MKV file played fine with Kodi on my old Windows PC. Is this a limitation of running Kodi on the Shield?

Do you mean in Kodi or MrMC?

I've had no major issues with Kodi and Dolby True HD or DTS HD MA (and I think I checked a couple of BBC titles with HRA on them) with my Shield TV.

Will double check now.

*** EDIT : DTS HD MA from a Blu-ray folder in .m2ts is playing fine in DTS HD MA to my Denon AVR.  DTS HD MA, DTS:X and Dolby True HD (not sure if Atmos) from a UHD Blu-ray ripped to an MKV also plays fine.

I'm running Leia Kodi 18.0-ALPHA1 git : 20171224-4a0e42f
I'm using Kodi. Not even sure what MrMC is?

When you say playing DTS HD works for you, do you have Kodi pass-through setting on?

On an unrelated note... how do you go about installing alpha/beta versions of Kodi on the Shield?

Thanks!

It's discussed a couple of posts above in this thread I think. SPMC was a fork of Kodi mainly developed by Koying I think, but I think development has now ceased and Koying has now moved to work with davilla and others in developing MrMC. MrMC is quite a modified fork of Kodi - and (at least one version of) it is iOS/tvOS store friendly (as it doesn't run Python plugins). It's available for both Apple and Android devices (and I think Amazon too?)

I copy the nightly .apk over to storage accessible in the Shield and then install them. Haven't done it for 3 months - as you can see the build I'm currently running dates back to Christmas (when I last fired up the Shield). I'm mainly running an ATV4K for streaming services and a mix of Chromebox, Minix U9, OSMC Vero 4K and no-name AMLogic boxes for Kodi. I have atypical requirements as I watch a lot of interlaced content.
@elee532 Try to configure „Pause during refresh rate change = 2.5sec“.

Nvidia Shield 4K video setting recommended are the following:

- 2160p 59,940Hz
- YCbCr 4:2:0 10Bit rec. 2020

For NON 4K videos (on 4K-HDR TV), wich are the best setting?

- 2160p 59,940Hz YCbCr 4:2:0 10Bit rec. 709 are OK?

I think the Shield TV supports resolution switching (but not colour space switching).

If you have a 4K display I'd run the Shield TV in Rec 709 1080p for non-4K content - as the TV upscaling to 4K will be better than the Shield upscaling to 4K.  For 4K content then if it is UHD I'd run Rec 2020 2160p 10 bit.  If it is some of the rarer Res 709 4K stuff then I'd run Rec 709...  (Media Info will tell you which it is - but any 24fps UHD Blu-ray sourced content is likely to be HDR10 Rec 2020, it's only 50 & 59.904p 4K stuff I'd check the colour gamut of)

I do not think the shield supports resolution switching.
And I do not see the big differences between having the upscaling to the shield rather than the TV.
So I prefer to use a fixed resolution 2160p (59,940 o 60Hz) for bot 4K and NO 4K videos.

but I do not know how to set the color space.
for 4K i thinks YCbCr 4:2:0 10Bit rec. 2020 is OK (recommended on nvidia shield stttings tab).
For NON 4K videos? YCbCr 4:2:0 10Bit rec. 709Huh??

Yes, the Shield does support both frame rate & resolution switching. But for resolution switching you'll need Kodi v18.

Hi, do you have some link at this Kodi 18 for NvidiaShieldTV?

Just install the Kodi Android Installer which is available from the official repository and you can update using it.

When watching Rec 2020 UHD content - you want a Rec 2020 gamut output
When watching Rec 709 HD content (and Rec 601 SD upscaled to Rec 709) you want a Rec 709 gamut output, as neither Kodi nor Android currently convert 709 gamut content to 2020 gamut.

The Shield TV doesn't automatically switch between 709 and 2020 flagged output - so you need to manually switch in nVidia Sheild TV Android settings, which is a bit dull after a while...

Is it auto 1080p > 4K only i.e. upwards or 4K<<-->>1080/720p ?

Reason I'm asking is because @Koying's auto resolution switch downwards has not been merged into Kodi Leia.
