More often than not, I see addons are old and inoperative. Is is just me.
The pdf addon will not open a pdf book....or pdfs in general?
The Hubble addon likewise does not access anything. Normal?

Where are these two add-ons you mention? I searched the official repository and there was no listing.
But yes, your statement is generally correct. If the add-on is in the Kodi Official repository, it is more likely to be properly maintained.
You must realise that most add-ons are created by volunteers. There is no service/maintenance agreement. There is no contract. These coders create add-ons for many reasons including hobby, personal satisfaction or because it is an add-on they want to use. Sometimes real life may rudely intrude upon their activities of maintaining their add-ons, and it eventually becomes inoperable. But that is the great thing about this free community operating under the GNU Licence. Anybody can then step in and take over the maintenance of the add-on.
So if you have some coding skills why not help out?
