Is there a way to turn off the shelf icons?

no... they're part of the added functionality.. i think if you play around with them you'll find them useful.

 I wouldn't mind them, but the problem I found is they are not clickable. I can highlight them, but it won't do anything if I select it. Maybe there is a setting I need to change.

what are they populating with? movies? can you send me some more infos?
