Kodi by default doesn't seem to allow me to sort movies by release date, just by year. I don't find creating and editing nfo files to create this effect. What is the appropriate tag in the nfo file that I can use to input the release date for the specified movie?

IIRC, the Year is the Release Date or the Premiered tag. Kodi just truncates the full entry to a year only for display.
