In order to debug another issue, I enabled debug logging of 18.0-Alpha 3 (18.0-ALPHA3 Git:20180716-97cbdb1). I then let Kodi idle, waiting to reproduce a problem that shows up with random-trailers plugin. Before any trailer was played, however, Kodi completely locked up. No input from IR, keyboard or mouse had any effect. The screen is locked up. The clock is stuck at 4:17pm and the debug memory/cpu, etc. is blocked.

Ubuntu 16.04. Upgraded from Kodi 17.6
After restarting Kodi, it locked up again within several seconds. After disabling all debug, it worked again:

Perhaps this is a different problem, but if I disable debugging and play a known good movie, Kodi froze up 10-15 minutes in.
Note that for this test I started with a virgin .kodi directory and selectively copied from the old .kodi directory: Database, keymaps, Lircmap, upnpserver.xml, sources.xml, passwords.xml, mediasources.xml, playlists, advancedsettings.xml (contains only several needed items, like mysql info).
get rid of script.service.kodi.callbacks and try again
btw: DEBUG: Window Manager Name: Compiz <-- compositing interferes with kodi
Retested using minimal .kodi directory (selectively copied from old .kodi directory: sources.xml, etc. but not addons, etc.).
Ran compiz config to not use compiz for kodi
Installed (18.0-ALPHA3 Git:20180718-bfdaaec)
Enabled extralogging, showloginfo, eventlog.enabled, eventlog.enablednotifications
Let Kodi do nothing for 5 minutes
Started navigating with mouse to different playlists, etc. Since some movie posters were missing, I started to choose a few new ones via the Info context menu.
Kodi Locked up.
