anyone noticed a problem with dvd vobsub subtitles not filling the display resolution, but appearing in the upper left quadrant of the display as if they are being displayed using the source media resolution?

seems to be a hardware acceleration issue. disabling mediacodec in the player video settings restores vobsubs to their correct size and position.
