Greetings,
first, thank you for all the work that has gone into Kodi
Now to my problem:
Kodi 18.4 on up-to-date Arch Linux.
I'm trying to see YouTube videos full screen (1920x1080), via the YouTube add-on and .strm files.
Some of the videos are quite low resolution ([email protected]).
These low-res videos play back with a lot of stuttering in Kodi, but play back fluently in both Vlc, Firefox and Chromium.
High-res videos (1280x720@30fps) play fluently in Kodi (and Vlc, Firefox and Chromium).
I can't find a magic Kodi settings kombination to play back these low-res videos fluently.
I have searched the wiki, the forum, and the net in general.
I have played around with:
- Adjust display refresh rate.
- Sync playback to display.
- Enable HQ scalers for scaling above, different percantages from 0-100.
- All the different whitelist options (the lowest is [email protected]).
- All the different deinterlacing methods during playback.
- All the different video scaling methods during playback.
- Post processing on/off during playback.
- Non-linear stretch on/off during playback.
I can get fluent playback by setting the "View mode" to "Original size" during playback, but then of course it's not full screen.
I see that as I turn the Pixel ratio down during playback, the playback becomes more an more fluent, but not quite as fluent as "View mode"="Original size".
Render method = Auto detect, and is greyed out.
There are no harware acceleration options.
A low-res video that stutters on my computer can be streamed from this URL:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjGd1C6E4ys
The same low-res video can be streamed in Kodi using this .strm file content:
plugin://plugin.video.youtube/play/?video_id=JjGd1C6E4ys
A hi-res video that plays fluently on my computer can be streamed from this URL:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4h7YzSwpCI
The same hi-res video can be streamed in Kodi using this .strm file content:
plugin://plugin.video.youtube/play/?video_id=u4h7YzSwpCI
The computer is an old laptop from around 2007, but given that both Vlc, Firefox and Chromium can play back these low-res videos in full screen (1920x1080) fluently, I hope I just need to find the proper Kodi settings kombination to get fluent playback in Kodi too.
Hardware specs, as Kodi reports them:
Video:
- GPU: Mesa DRI Intel® 965GM
- Screen resolution: 1920x1080@60Hz - Full screen
- OpenGL vendor: Intel Open Source Technology Center
- OpenGL version: 2.1 Mesa 19.2.1
Hardware:
- CPU: Intel® Core2 Duo CPU T8100 @ 2.10GHz
- Total memory: 3864MB
- Free memory: Rarely goes below 3300MB during playback
It's a dual core CPU, and the usage rarely goes above 15% during playback of a low-res video, and 55% during playback of a hi-res video.
I can't find any clues in the Kodi log, but if anyone else can, here are logs of playing a low-res video and a hi-res video, respectively:
Log from a Kodi session playing the above mentioned low-res video:
Low-res log
Log from a Kodi session playing the above mentioned hi-res video:
Hi-res log
Best regards
Johnny
