For the live of me, I can't figure out why some 2.35:1 (cinema scope) are showing the subtitles at the bottom of the video material (higher on screen) and why some are showing below the video (lower on the screen). The settings in Player/Language/Subtitle position "Below video" and "Bottom of video" don't seem to change anything.
Alternatively, I would like to know if there is way to hot key/map their position, as I have a projector that switches aspect ration which can push subtitles outside of screen. Finally, if there is a way to limit subtitle to single line (that is probably unheard of). Thanks
Matrix 19.3 Nvidia Shield
I figured out what was going on shortly after I hit create. Some movies were incorectly detected as 16:9, while they are actually cinemascope. This forces subtitles at the bottom.
The other 2 questions still stand - can I move subtitles on the fly with a key map? Can a single row be forced (even if it means smaller font)?

One thing I can think of is that some 21:9 / 2.35:1 videos still get black bars added for whatever dumb reason to make up for a 16:9 screen. The same goes for the popular 'Netflix aspect ratio' of 18:9. I tend to remove those added black bars from the video file, so that the actual video display gets shown properly. I also raise the vertical height of such videos so I can place subtitles in the open (black) space below the video, that way the subtitles are not obstructed in any way inside the video content, but can be read properly underneath.
Also, the subtitle routines have been reworked in Kodi 20 Nexus, I'm not sure if your 'debacle' still is a thing.
I guess I could wait for 20 to be released for Android and see what the have done. By change they added subtitle position to playback quick settings?

How about making screenshots/photos of the subtitles from the entire TV screen so we can see some context, instead of making extreme close-ups which don't really help?
I now download
Maven's Kodi-Builds202301080127-Nexus, installed on SonyTV 95H, and still incorrect. Installing on the Ugoos AM6 Plus is correct.
Maven's Kodi-Builds20221215-Nexus,Installed on both devices separately, correct.
Maven's Kodi-Builds20230105-Nexus,Installed on both devices separately, incorrect
Is it possible to have a quick 1 minute sample of the file? It might happen that this usecase was never checked in the v20 subtitle rewrite.
please share also a kodi debug log
just a precisation
Kodi subtitle settings are for text based subtitles
and you are playing a video with image based subtitles,
so you cannot use subtitle settings and also you cannot move the subtitles
the position is this case is fixed by video authors
(so we have to verify what happens in your use case)
thanks for the sample
i just tried on Windows and also on Android with same results
if as you said above this result is correct
suggest you to install official Kodi versions from our mirrors and try again
this video is cropped and the subtitle resolutions are in full hd, then can fall outside video (for video i mean the picture)
instead a result like this (played on MPV):
is downsizing the subtitles to the cropped resolution of the video
then subs fall within the video
what is the name of this film?
a comparison with original blueray would be useful to see the difference
Thank you very much for your help,
I installed the official kodi-20230108-d1f18298-Nexus-27736-armeabi-v7a, position is normal, but it plays HDR10,.
I will wait for the official KODI that supports the DoVi version to test again.
Thanks again!
