Hi,

Like many satisfied long term Xbmc on Xbox users I'm contemplating a move to a more modern platform but am put off the inconvenience and expense of a dedicated PC.

For the benefit of those of us considering the Apple TV, could you please guide us through the following FAQs.

1. What are the benefits of the Apple TV over the Xbox? Any cons?

2. Can you easily upgrade the Apple TV HDD to say 500 GB?

3. Does the file system support long filenames?

4. Can you plug a large USB drive directly into the Apple TV?

5. Does the Apple TV have the grunt to parse large music tag databases?

6. Where does the Apple TV fall short?

7. Is the Apple TV perfectly quiet?

8. Does the Apple TV start from a remote, and how quickly?

9. Does the XBMC port differ significantly between platforms?

10. How is archvillian Steve Jobs trying to stop us having fun with the ATV?

Thanks,

FB
Welcome to the forums!

These questions are all very common and have been answered many times before. Lucky for you we have a solution to this! This should solve all of the above. Failing that link, this one should cover it.
1. No idea, never had an Xbox
2. It is possible but because of the design it is not so easy.
3. Yes
4. Yes. It needs some hacking
5. I guess so
6. High end HD video
7. Yes. But it runs hot
8. No. And you can not off it. It is meant to be an "always on" machine.
9. Not much, it is very consistent.
10. He is not.

2) Once you find a 500GB 2.5" drive, no problem Smile

3) The AppleTV runs OSX, not a problem.

4) If you enable USB device support, sure.

8) The AppleTV is on (about 30 Watts) or off ( zero Watts) by the power plug. Boots in less than 30 seconds. Look to X10 power controllers if you want a remote on/off.

10) Steve Jobs does not care or this game would have ended a long time ago.
I'd say the best thing about the TV is its silence and being able to handle 720p h264 content. The remote isn't as good as the Xbox Media Center extender one that I use with the Xbox.
Thanks very much for the replies. Very helpful.

I have one more question:

Can you hack and manage the Apple TV box through a PC or do you need a Mac?

I have done everything with a Windows system (except maybe my first ATV USB stick made from an old PPC system - but since ATV USB for Windows came along I just added WinSCP and Putty, so it's all good Smile

1. What are the benefits of the Apple TV over the Xbox? Any cons?

Xbox over the ATV
- plays games (xbox games, emulation, etc)
- better remote (but ATV remote does the job)
- has a built in optiacal drive
- ability to use bigger drives

ATV over XBOX
- plays must - 720
- Itunes connectivity (wife loves video rentals)
- silent (love this)
- SUPER SUPER easy to hack (I used a PC)
- Mr. Jobs is not standing in the way of development like M$ is. Imagine if M$ allowed the 360 to be hacked.
- small
- HDMI (needed an expansion pack to just get component out of the Xbox)
