im not good with Ubuntu directories so i don't know where to go to get debug. i just wanted to see if xbmc performed better under Linux then windows vista. Can someone help me with this problem?
You're apparently not good with searching before you post either. Please do so, it was a quite popular issue ~12mo ago.
would it be too much trouble to refer to the thread in which this problem was handled? I have the exact same problem but cannot find the post your are referring to...
Most probably audio is not properly setup. Install latest ALSA drivers. The guide & script is here, on the WIKI page:

From what 'wise' ppl say, XBMC is syncing video with audio. If audio stream is not properly recognized, the video is being played back as fast as the system can.

Had the same thing when I setup my system. Setting up ALSA driver properly fixed the issue. One of the guys here completely automated the process (and wrote an excellent guide too), so it's quite easy to do now.

Don't forget to run alsamixer at the end and make sure the volume level is up (in 70-90%), as well as 'unmute' the HDMI.

Usually sound issues in ubuntu with XBMC are because of PulseAudio, especially in intrepid
