I bought a GeForce 9400 GT with passiv cooling. Its running pretty hot, about 80-90 C. Ive now put on some artic silver, but someone told me to underclock the card. How do I do that?

Some settings i Ubuntu, or in BIOS?

Thanks for help...

In windows you can use CoolBitz, Riva Tuner or the Nvidia software... not sure in Linux but could be a good starting point....

Thanks. CoolBitz looks easy.

I now have 550 MHz for GPU and 350 MHz for Memory. What can I underclock to without making my HPTC to act stange?

Sorry i have no idea Sad I have never over/undeclocked GPU or CPU, i hope someone else can answer you.
Nvidia related questions i think you better try http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/
90 degrees is well within spec, if that's what you're worried about.

I guess that was one of my worries yes, but also power consumption.

Under linux there is nvclock program.

I have enable coolbits in xorg.conf, and I can adjust with two sliders. But at reboot its going back to normal. Even if I set it with "sudo".

You could always modify the video cards bios.
Can be risky if things are not done right. But its not difficult.
All you need is NVFash to read and write the BIOS and NiBiTor to edit it.
A windows based machine to use NiBiTor and NVFlash is used in DOS
I just bought a 9400gt 1gb on ebay.

I haven't quite got a running system for it yet (still need a proper case & HDD) but once I do I'll give it a go and get back to you.. dont hold your breath for a quick response though.

As to what you can underclock too, trial and error. decrease 1 setting at a time, by no more than 5/10 points. until you get errors. generally underclocking is a lot safer than overclocking for obvious reasons.

I'd say your best bet is to change the settings, play killasample back, change settings, play killasample. Keep going till either the card won't go lower or the killasample starts to drop frames. I'd say a decent setting would be the last setting before killasample drops frames + 10%.
Being honest I have no idea if this will work as my card only arrived today and I won't have a rig setup properly before the end of the month at the earliest.

@motd2k, 90 degrees is fine but that is increasing the overall temp of your htpc, so cooler is better.
The clock settings for Nvidia are set per X session for a reason... so you can't screw things up and be stuck with them.

I suggest reading the man page for nvidia-settings:

Quote:man nvidia-settings

For information on how to overclock from cli.
With this knowledge you can easily write a little 1 line script to change clock settings on the start of your X session.

I tried to minimum the speed of the card, and that worked good. BUT, when I then checked the info in XBMC, I saw that my Hz of the screen wasnt 60 Hz anymore. It was only about 20 Hz. =)

Soo I guess that I underclocked soo much that it coult keep up in 60 Hz. =)..

Now Im back to normal... =( To bad, cause my psu has started to sound now with my new gfx...
