Full Version: mac mini - xbmc - WMV (no sound, twice the speed)

Hi,

I've recently got myself a new mac mini and start using XBMC. Everything is great, except for two things:

- WMV files play, but at twice the speed AND with NO sound. I saw this thread: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid...hlight=wmv. Somebody (a developer) says that nobody has implemented the WMV codec in ffmpeg, which is used by XBMC. But how come that the wmv movie plays, but just twice the speed and without sound?

- I've got myself an .iso (normal DVD), which I would like to play in XBMC on my tv. When I start the .iso, XBMC crashes!!!! How can I find out what makes XBMC crash and what can I do about it?

edit: the xbmc features page says, you should be able to play wmv: http://xbmc.org/about/features/. Or are only certain versions of .wmv files playable?
Thanks in advance.
(new mac mini, XBMC SVN build 19195)
wma files with WMA3 5.1 audio plays fast because portaudio is not capable of downmixing 5.1 to 2 channel audio.

You might try the osx-coreaudio branch. These videos will play there since it uses coreaudio which is capable of doing the downmix.
Hi, thanks!
I don't completely understand what you mean.
Here's what I think you mean:
XBMC uses portaudio (http://www.portaudio.com/), which cannot convert 5.1 sound to 2 channel audio? I currently have some very simple computer speakers connected to my mac mini. Does this mean, that when I connect my mac mini to my receiver with optical out (spdif), I do get sound, because XBMC doesn't have to downgrade to stereo audio?

With "osx-coreaudio branch" you mean, someone branched XBMC and started using osx-coreaudio instead of portaudio? I looked for that specific XMBC brach, but didn't find any. Can you point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance

portaudio cannot downmix 5.1 to 2.0 using the xbmc "analog" setting.

spdif is digital passthrough. That might work IF what comes out WMA3 looks like ac3/dts AND your receiver is the brand that works with portaudio's passthough method. You will just have to try it and see if it works for you.

osx-coreaudio -> http://xbmc.org/browser/branches/osx-coreaudio. There are no binary releases so you will have to build it.
The MPlayer and VLC Media Player are the best players to play WMV on Mac.
