Going to be building a XBMC system next week taking advantage of VDPAU

I've gotten hold of a Dell Optiplex 170L where the spec is/will be basically...

Intel Celeron 2.4GHz (533MHz Bus)
Nvidia 8400GS PCI

For RAM I have the choice of :
512MB (333MHz) (2x256MB) running in Dual Channel mode or
768MB (333MHz) (256+512) running in Single Channel mode

Content will be mainly 720p H264 and SD stuff (DivX XVid etc)

Do I go for more RAM or the Dual Channel setup?

Also, I'll be doing a minimal install of Ubuntu (64bit) not sure what version yet, with no window manager.
Their is no need to install 64bit since you have less than 3GB ram ...

Also it is probably a good idea to have at least 1GB ram when running 720P content on XBMC ..

Or even then. You'll be much happier with xbmc on a 32bit system for the near future anyway.

He aims to run VDPAU with a dedicated gfx card, he needs very little RAM so long as the box is dedicated to XBMC.

So long as that's the 512MB version of the 8400gs you should be fine. I'd probably opt for the dual channel mem configuration unless it causes trouble.
Thanks for the replies.

I'll stick to 32bit then and I'll try both combos of RAM to see which is best. The 8400GS is indeed 512MB when it turns up!
