I'm not really familiar with Linux. I installed XBMC on the latest version of Ubuntu. I was doing pretty good, I even spanned a couple hard drives. Then I tried to get SMB working. I could not see my workgroup, and after following a how to on the Ubuntu forums to create a SMB share suddenly XBMC stopped working. So I'll probably end up reformatting, and starting from scratch.
So would someone that has already got XBMC working with a workgroup please point me to a how to, or something that will tell me how to join a workgroup?
I would really appreciate it.
Could it be that the reason that I couldn't see my workgroup shares becasue I didn't have a static ip setup in Ubuntu, or becasue the name of my workgroup is ZOO, and not workgroup or mshome?
Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop
32 bit version
PPA install
XBMC will no longer start, or it comes up for a second and the closes.
Please read the sticky on how to form a proper bugreport (it's in my signature aswell).
But as a stab in the dark, I'm betting your having x64? x64 doesn't work proper because Ubuntu had a really sever bug with libsmbclient so we couldn't use their package, hence we had to package our own. Which doesn't work proper on x64.
Since the bug is fixed (in jaunty not intrepid for some idiotic reason) we are contemplating moving back to system.
Cheers,
Tobias
I am using an AMD64 processor, but I installed the regular 32bit version of Ubuntu. I figured it was the safer bet. I'm using an nforce4 motherboard. I wonder if I should try another network adapter. I'll look at the sticky, and post a bug report.
So does that mean XBMC has its own SMB client/server?

Just client, but we use same library as used in ubuntu but just own implementation of it. But it doesn't really matter if your on x86 as it should work perfect there

When I browsed for shares in XBMC it didn't find anything.
Its might have to do with the fact that my workgroup name is ZOO, like I mentioned above. I'll try editing a config file that I saw mentioned in the Ubuntu forums and see if that helps.
I posted some of the info you requested in my original post. If there is additional info that you need please let me know.
Yeah a
Debug Log would be great aswell.
Cheers,
Tobias.
I'm at work right now, and don't have access to the machine. Probably a good thing since I was getting kind of frustrated, but as soon as I get home I'll post it.
I used Ubuntu 9.04, would it be at all easier to use a earlier version of Ubuntu, like 8.04?
