Hi,

I am a huge fan of XBMC, using it in my good old XBOX for more than 5 years, and 2 years now in my ubuntu HTPC...And then my problems started...

OK, I've read somewhat 1,000 pages here and elsewhere, referring to the same problem Alsa-Pulseaudio passthrough problems, for the past 2 years.

It was all fine for a while -I found cure by deleting Pulsaudio in 8.04 and 8.10. And then I made the mistake upgrading to 9.04 and downgrading in everything else.

I really want to know is there a way of having all kind of sound -PCM, DTS, DD, AC3, coming out of my optical passthrough, without having to rebuild ALSA, ubuntu and Gods know what else, every time I want to hear music after a DTS movie, or vice versa, and sound get stuck?
I know it might not be 100% XBMC problem, but that's what I use!

Thank you very much!
Using just Alsa is the only way to get passthrough compatibility. I'm not quite sure I fully understand your question. Removing pulseaudio just as you've done in previous installations will get you in the same place as you were before. I don't think they've actually changed alsa from 8.10 to 9.04. They have changed the kernel though which may effect some things.

Try updating your alsa from a PPA first, here is one that has 1.0.20:
https://launchpad.net/~ricotz/+archive/p...ld/1092902

If that doesn't work properly, try updating it using the updater script found here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6589810

I have used the script and it works quiet well, but I would prefer a PPA because it's managed.

I'm not sure what other problems you might be having.
