Just to report a success story....
I got bored of my noisy, power hungry C2D based Vista PC running xbmc so have retired it.
Ultimately I'll be looking to move to a new platform featuring the Broadcom HD chip.
So as a stop gap I bought a £50 HP DC7100 with a 3.0GHz P4 HT. Installed a cheapo NVidia 9400GT. Installed Jaunty, messed about with latest NVidia drivers and tested the "killa sample".
The result was flawless stutter-free playback at something like 10% CPU.
Absolutely delighted - especially when you compare this with the windows pc it replaced : the new pc cost me £80 all in vs £600 for my old one.
I'm not a windows basher, but I am thrilled to bits with the value for money afforded by the enabling of VDPAU in my favourite media centre.
Thanks to everyone involved.
Not sure how I'm going to cope with sound over HDMI, remote control, PPAs and such like but the basics are working perfectly.
