Is it possible to somehow insert the codes my remote sends as an HID input device directly into my keymap and bypass EventGhost, or can xbmc just not see that HID input at all?

See http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=60794 and accompanying discussion. There is a patch to support keystrokes from remotes, but whether it will make it into the next release I don't know.
