Hi,

I am a noob and i would like someone to give me a few steps of how to make this upgrade. I've been trying for 10 hours now without success.

Thanks
you've given us WAY too much information about your setup, so much information in fact that it'll take us far too long to go through your system specs, current version, and what you're trying to do to assist you. Please provide LESS information next time.

/sarcasm.

theres a sticky about how to post problems, and there are a bajillion threads on how to upgrade....see that link 3rd from the right about 2 1/2 inches above this box? says "search"...try that ?
I think you're being unreasonable to make suck sarcasm. In the title I post that I've got the latest stable release of xbmc live and I want to upgrade to the latest beta1. My system has an nvidia VGA. What else would you possibly need? I did a lot of searching and I was able to upgrade the system but not the xbmc app itself. I must be doing something wrong with the source list. There is not one post that guides you through the upgrade procedure fir the beta1. If there is I must be an idiot not to see it since I've been looking since yesterday but haven't found anything. Since you seem to be smarter than me maybe it wouldn't be so hard for you to show me the link that I'm missing.

Thanks
From one noob to another Smile

Login to tty2 after live has loaded. (ctrl+alt+F2)

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

then install the dependencies for 9.10

sudo apt-get install libenca0 libfontconfig1 libfreetype6
wget https://launchpad.net/~team-xbmc/+archiv...1_i386.deb
wget https://launchpad.net/~team-xbmc/+archiv...1_i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i libass3_0.9.6-1xbmc1_i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i libass-dev_0.9.6-1xbmc1_i386.deb
rm libass3_0.9.6-1xbmc1_i386.deb
rm libass-dev_0.9.6-1xbmc1_i386.deb

then

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install xbmc
Thanks mate. Can you please send me a copy of your sources.list so I can copy it to mine? I've messed arround with it too much and I don't think it's right.
Seriously, blindly installing and messing around with your sources is going to cause you more problems.

You have given exactly zero useful information to allow people to help you. No mention of your distribution, how you installed, what you have had problems with, etc..
Well i installed the XBMC Live 9.04.1 stable so i'm using watever distribution comes with it. I've modified the sources and added some for the karmic distribution. I really dont understand what else you need? Tell me and i will answer.
Well if you have installed from the 9.04.1 live cd it is based on Jaunty, not Karmic. If you have added Karmic sources it will fail / cause you problems.

What exactly have you added / removed from your sources? You still haven't told us how your upgrade has failed and what you have done.
I've removed the karmic entries and now my sources.list looks like this:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc-svn/ppa/ubuntu/ jaunty main
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/xbmc-addons/ppa/ubuntu/ jaunty main
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc-svn/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc-svn/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
#deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc-svn/ubuntu/ jaunty main
#deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc-svn/ubuntu/ jaunty main

When i run apt-get install xbmc i get:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
xbmc: Depends: xbmc-common (= 9.11~beta1-jaunty2) but 9.04.1-jaunty1 is to be installed
Depends: xbmc-skin-confluence (= 9.11~beta1-jaunty2) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: xbmc-skin-pm3-hd (= 9.11~beta1-jaunty2) but 9.04.1-jaunty1 is to be installed
Depends: xbmc-web-pm3 (= 9.11~beta1-jaunty2) but 9.04.1-jaunty1 is to be installed
E: Broken packages

When i try to install all these dependencies one by one i get libass3

when i try to install this i get:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package libass3 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package libass3 has no installation candidate

Is this any more helpful?

Thank you for trying to help
You still didn't search, because I just posted this same issue, and how to resolve it not more than a few hours ago.

Here is my /etc/apt/sources.list.d/xbmc.org.list file:

Quote:deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
# deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc-svn/ppa/ubuntu/ jaunty main
# deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/xbmc-addons/ppa/ubuntu/ jaunty main
# deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc-svn/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
# deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc-svn/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc-svn/ubuntu/ jaunty main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc-svn/ubuntu/ jaunty main

After you change that, run

Quote:sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade -y

You may first have to run sudo apt-get remove xbmc to uninstall your current version, but YMMV.

And no, I don't think I was being too hard, because one of the mods would surely come down on you, considering you were pretty vague about your initial problem. You might have 9.04, 9.04.1, etc... even then who knows what rev you have, etc. It helps to provide more info if you want people to help you out. There is a sticky in the forums about how to post a problem in a useful manner. At the bare minimum, the results of your attempted upgrade being pasted in here would've been a start in your original post. posting more info is better than "It doesn't work. Can anyone help?" and expect us to figure it out Smile
Thanks, i actually did take a look at your post. You must understand if you are not familiar with linux its very easy to make a small mistake and screw things up.

I am unexperienced with linux. The first time I ever touched it was when I built my HTPC, because I chose to use an Atom and therefore could only use XBMC for linux, as I needed VDPAU options. I've learned alot from reading through the linux forum and googling.

As far as screwing up, I've done it many times. Thats why you should use something like Clonezilla to make images before you go changing or upgrading, so you can roll back.
EvanRich!

I've just found your post that solved my same problem. I'm totally new to Linux and still trying to figure out a few things.

Thanks so much for your help! Laugh
