On the latest beta build as of 24/11 on Ubuntu Karmic I am getting grey noise when playing large / HD video files be they .mkv, .mp4 or .avi. Regular SD avis are playing OK. I havent been able to establish yet whether it is to do with ac3 / dts vs stereo, or whether its to do with the resolution or bitrate. I read elsewhere that it can be due to VDPAU not working owing to the version of the nvidia driver. I think I am on v 1.85 of the nvidia driver so maybe its that.

Try to disable the studio level conversation in video settings (playback).
I think I might have experienced a bug with this setting, but I actually havent tried to replicate it to be honest:
On my eariler 9.04 SVN Build, I had to Enable and then Disable Studio Level Conversion, before it was actually disabled.
It seemed to default to enabled, even if it was defaulted as disabled in the settings. No idea if this is still the case.

Disabling hq upscaling with VDPAU did the trick on this one, when combined with disabling studio level conversion. Thanks.

This worked for me as well, however don't we want those features enabled?
