I installed an older version of xbmc for a friend almost a year ago. When updating to newest build, Would I have to remove the older version and then install the new one? or is there a live update feature?

Just install v9.11 on top of your existing installation. You might want to back up your userdata folder first, just in case.

Personally I always uninstall older versions of software first, but then 30 years of working in IT have left me paranoid :-) If you do uninstall you will lose your library and sources. I don't know how big a deal this would be.
