any help would be appreciated - sorry if i've done anything wrong!
I'm guessing you have to set speaker layout to 2.0.
yep that did the trick thanks.

Any reason for choosing 2.0 ? I'm guessing channel numbers are unimportant to optical as its the receiver doing the work, so its a little confusing having the speaker setting under the audio output setting ? (I have a 5.1 setup)
Spdif only does 2.0 with pcm.
thanks, i learnt something new today!

maybe the xbmc interface / speaker choice should be reflected in choice of audio output to save confusion (for people like me Laugh)
Definitely, people now think "hey I have a 5.1 setup, I'll set it to 5.1" which is wrong when using spdif.
Noticed this too and worked it out a while ago.

Surely it would be best to have an option for XBMC to encode all audio to dolby digital 5.1. Obviously a downgrade in audio quality for say FLAC albums and the like but for other stuff it wouldn't really make a difference bearing in mind that most people if we're honest are playing scene rip videos with audio in mp3 at abr 128k.

Or even better an option to differentiate - so audio for "TV Shows" section gets encoded to DD5.1 and the rest is untouched. Smile
That's just ridiculous, it'll waste cpu cycles, degrade sound quality and you lose automatic dolby pro logic selection on the receiver.
