So I ctrl alt f2 to change the wifi settings and when I reboot my computer xbmc goes straight back to the terminal. How do I get it to change back to the GUI?

XBMC Live?
If so presumably there will be a log somewhere (/var/log/messages ?) that will tell you why the startup stopped at a login prompt. You can log in with username xbmc and password xbmc to check the log. Incidentally if you type startx it will start X Windows, and if you right click on the desktop there's a link somewhere on the popup menu to start XBMC.
It seems a long shot, but while searching the XBMC Live forum for this problem I spotted this post, http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=76023, claiming that XBMC Live halted at the login screen unless an ethernet cable was plugged in.
