If i were to hypothetically launch XBMC from a mapped network drive on another computer, and use it in portable mode, would it then use the same library? I'd love to have both libraries be identical to one another on two different setups without much hassle, but there seems to be some rather epic threads on just how difficult that would be.

Yes, but you could only reliably use one machine at a time. It also might be a bit slow, depending on your network speed. Both machines would have to have access to all the media using identical paths, and you'd want identical versions on each machine.
