I just did an:

Code:
apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade

it removed XBMC from my system, so I did this:
Code:
root@xbmc-live:~# sudo apt-get install xbmc

what do I need to do? I run the latest packages usually. Something went wrong though. How can I fix this?
Read a story to your child, that's much better than let it watch TV/videos anyway.
Get the fuck out. You are part of the solution or part of the problem. Now because of your idiotic comment, this post is no longer a 0 response attention getter.

The fact remains that the package is broken. What is the solution?
Did you try:

sudo apt-get install xbmc-standalone xbmc-data xbmc-skin-confluence xbmc-web

Cheers!
Yes, I did. No such luck. It kept telling me that there was a problem with tose three broken packages.

I'm making plans for the worst.. I'm backing up everything in case the only option is to reinstall from a live cd. I hope someone can come up with something. I've tried alot.
problem is the svn has been fuxored for the past few weeks (i messed up my box a few weeks ago trying to upgrade my camelot box to svn) .. try this http://forum.xbmc.org/showpost.php?p=577378&postcount=4
the solution by burningsky works. of course instead of insulting other forum members you could just have had a look into the SVN thread Wink

I'm siding with the original poster, here. If you don't have kids, you don't understand. And the fact that ion_man referred to kids as "it" tells me he doesn't have any.

happy sesame street!

I tried that. I downloaded the SVN and it did not work. That version kept giving me the same errors even after an apt-get purge xbmc*

I was able to remove all sources pertaining to the SVN, install stock XBMC from the team PPA and then install my drivers. I cannot get LIVE to work for some reason. I have to call it using xinit from root though. it does not work automatically. xinit only works after installing the drivers. After rebooting, it does not work. I'm really at a loss here. what do I need to do?
"sudo apt-get -f install" fixed the dependency problems for me. I was then able to get the BurningSky solution working.
well, i've kept pushing and somehow I've managed to upgrade my version of ubuntu to maverick and am installing new drivers now. I just hope it won't be fruitless.
I just installed Linux kernel 2.6.35-020635-generic #020635 (Maverick). XBMC installed fine through apt-get, but the packages which run certain aspects are broken.

I ran into issues installing nvidia from packages and ended up compiling from source.

LIRC will not compile! Apt-get provided a package which downloaded and failed. The LIRC source drivers would not compile so I compiled each of the separate folders and installed one by one. So on their own, both would fail and not work, but together, the drivers from the apt-get worked and the rest of the package from the SVN worked. I ended up having to edit the apt database.

So to correct that:
Code:
Code:
gedit /var/lib/dpkg/status
then search and find the package in question. In my case it was lirc. So I searched and found lirc and it said:
Code:
Code:
Package: lirc
Status: install ok half-configured
so I changed that to:
Code:
Code:
Package: lirc
Status: install ok installed
And LIRC worked after that. No problems with apt-get claiming a 1/2 installed package and LIRC was chugging away and LIRCing.

I could not get the xbmc.bin file to execute from the xbmc-live package. So I ended up writing a script for my /etc/rc.local file which goes like this

Code:
#! /bin/bash
while [ 1 ]
do
xinit xbmc
done
The system works again, despite all the difficulties and 2 days of downtime. This should assist anyone in my position who does not want to start fresh after upgrading to the latest SVN.
