Unfortunately I tried the latest Live CD (xbmc-9.11-live-repack.zip)
on a HP Compaq nc6220 laptop.

During boot up it caused some very high frequency noise
and then a continuous LOUD hiss, so LOUD that I felt pain
in my ears ! From laptop speakers, do you realize??!!!
I jumped from my chair and in the panic I had to turn off the
laptop from the power button. Meanwhile I began to feel
burning smell.

What the hell are you giving away?!!

Fortunately it seems that there were no permanent damages
to the laptop. Anyway let me say fuck you!
Yes, Live comes with a built-in detonator. You're lucky you hit the power button before it blew up.

bye.

And when you boot windows and your laptop completes frying itself, are you coming back to apologize? No
You tried to install the al-Qaeda edition. There are different flavors of Live, the most popular seems to be xbmc-9.11-live-cinnamon-repack.zip. It plays some pan flute sounds during install.
This is because you own a HP laptop, stupid ****!!! It comes with a self destruct mechanism. As soon as you load Open Source software, the motherboard will go into overdrive. The smell probably was the GPU burning into your motherboard. The GPU is the first thing to go, the CPU will follow.

Seriously, stick with Windows MCE... It's made for people like you, people who don't know S**T about computers.
RolleyesRolleyes you felt a burning smell ?

Coupled with a sonic noise with a high enough pitch to hurt your ears Huh

In all likely hood it has nothing to do with XBMC, my bet is that you didnt put the cd in correctly (ie not clipped down), when it started to boot up, the CD spun against the inside of the drive, making the high screech and a burning smell.

Cant think of any other way heat could be generated so quickly (during bootup) to cause a burning smell. (if that problem is no longer occurring)
Laugh
Ahh forgot its an HP. The GPU is buggered on a whole load of their laptops (not kidding)
