Full Version: XBMC sporadically freezing (crashing?)

I've had XBMC v9.11 installed on my AppleTV for a few months (6/3/10) - but lately (within the last week) it has started to freeze up while watching pretty much any type of video. Some were higher data rate 720p movies (yes, the ATV was dropping frames, but until I can get a Crystal HD card installed we have to suffer through the frame drops) - others are not HD "encoded for AppleTV" movies, TV shows etc..as well as .avi's.

You can get through most of a movie or a few minutes of some other show - completely sporadic and then the screen freezes and XBMC and the ATV do not respond to any remote control clicks. I've had my kids sit down and watch some TV Show marathons using the ATV OS and no problems - so appears to be an XBMC related "opportunity".

Doesn't make sense to since nothing new has been installed or configured on the ATV or XBMC.

Here's my last xbmc.log: http://pastebin.com/Na0E172w
and here's the xbmc.old.log: http://pastebin.com/sNFAc7iv

I looked at the console and crashreporter logs but they are dated several weeks ago. Do I need to supply anything else?

I'm thinking of reinstalling XBMC - but not sure if I just run it again from Launcher or if there are other steps. Or should I do a Factory Restore on the ATV, do the ATV OS upgrades to get back to 3.0.2 and then redo the patchstick install and XBMC (this sounds rather excessive).

I'm planning to order a Broadcom Crystal HD card soon so will want to install a new build of XBMC - so guess I'll need to learn how to do that...

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance...this has really killed the WAF this past week!

Oh so old Smile
ok, gonna sound like a total noob here...

...but that was the version that got installed with the Patchstick? Or at least that is the (only) version that show up under the LAUNCHER tab in the ATV menu. The Launcher version is 3.2.5

I must be missing something...(obviously huh) - can you point me towards some thread(s) that explain how to get a newer version onto my ATV and/or how do download and install the latest nightly builds. Like I said, I know I will need a newer version to work with the Crystal HD card - but I guess I thought 9.11 was the latest stable build to have?

I feel rather dumb now...Blush

This would be a good thread to look at http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=69321
OK - I read through it all...and some of the referenced threads that were applicable what I'm looking for and have these questions (all of which are probably something I should have understood but am missing something...I am reading first before I ask though) Wink

Call it being cautious...

Current status:
1) I ssh'd in and ran this: "defaults write com.teamxbmc.xbmclauncher XBMCAdditionalDownloadPlistURLs -array-add http://crystalhd.sartori.at/files/crystalhd.plist" - I now have the r156 menu item in Launcher
2) I don't have the Crystal HD card in hand yet
3) I haven't run the new addition to the Launcher menu yet...
4) I DO want to update my XBMC version to:
. (a) something that is quite recent and...
. (b) a "good match" for when I do install the card

Questions:
1) from one of the subsequent posts - looks like I should also run this to add an option to Launcher to download/install a recent nightly? "defaults write com.teamxbmc.xbmclauncher XBMCAdditionalDownloadPlistURLs -array-add http://mirrors.xbmc.org/nightlies/osx/update_urls.plist" - is this the best way to got about this?
2) I'm guessing that the versions there are the only ones I am selecting from (32710 through 33240) or 8/12 thru 8/28 ?
3) looks like 33122 is working solidly for various users,,,but I'm guessing the choice is mine right Wink - also guessing anything older is old news...
4) any issues going ahead with Andy's auto-installer for the Crystal HD IN ADVANCE of installing the physical card?

Thanks for the confirmations and/or clarifications...definitely enjoying the learning...my wife not so much, but she will be thrilled when the dust settles.
